If you’re a vinyl-loving individual you’d certainly go the extra mile to ensure that your vinyl is stored properly. In order to do this, they must be stored in their ideal environment.
Factors below must be considered:
Generally, heat is the number one enemy of vinyl as high heat level and direct light will warp and even melt them. Your album will have unrecoverable damage once it reaches the melting point which can vary from 212°F to 500°F (100°C to 260°C) depending on composition and additives applied to the PVC during its manufacturing. If storage is too humid, album covers could expand and shrink due to dampness.
While heat causes warping and melting, it doesn’t mean that you can just throw your records below freezing point (0°C) as it causes brittleness, which increase the risk of breaking. Thawing after could damage the sleeve and cause the growth of mould and mildew.
Thus, temperature and humidity must be prioritised.
For vinyl records the ideal temperature is between 65°F (18°C) and 70°F (21°C). As for humidity, the ideal climate for vinyl record storage is 65° to 70° F and 45% to 50% humidity.
