When it comes to storing your instruments in a closet or in a storage unit, both temperature and humidity must be given prime consideration.
If both humidity and temperature are high, it can cause cracks and open joints of your instruments. Increase in humidity, increases moisture in wood which cause it to expand and swell. Bottomline is rapid changes in humidity and temperature can cause serious damage to your instruments especially wood instruments.
Musical instruments need steady and moderate conditions so extreme heat and cold must be totally avoided. Generally, instruments do well in temperatures of about 70 degrees Fahrenheit, at humidity levels of between 40-60%.
For wooden instruments like guitars, the ideal temperature and humidity for a wooden instrument is 45%-55% humidity and 72-77 degrees.
While it’s advisable to keep your instrument stored in its case for protection, it’s always better to also have a sensor that tracks both temperature and humidity.
